You may wonder what applying pressure to parts of your feet has got to do with easing stomach ache, joint pains or heartburn? It is all to do with restoring your body’s natural balance through the principles of reflexology. The month of September is the time to find out all about reflexology with the World Reflexology Week running from 21 – 27 September.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a style of massage that is often used to relieve tension and in some cases has helped individuals with other medical conditions. It is a non-intrusive complementary therapy, based on the theory that different zones on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. By manipulating these zones it stimulates the movement of energy along nerve channels. This helps to restore homeostasis, or balance, to the whole body.
How does Reflexology work?
Reflexology uses finger and thumb manipulations to restore reflex points that correspond to a body part. It is suggested that the human foot contains over 7,000 nerve endings each of which is one of these reflex points. With so many reflex points the movements have to be precise and care taken to cover them all to give comprehensive treatment. Reflexologists know which area of the foot corresponds to which part of the body with learning maps that mark out specific zones on the foot corresponding to areas of the body.
What is World Reflexology Week?
World Reflexology Week is being held to promote the practice of reflexology. Throughout the UK events are being run by members of the Association of Reflexologists across the country to raise awareness.
