Innate Resilience: Accessing clarity, calm and confidence, even when life feels uncertain
It really fascinates me how differently we can experience life from one day to the next.
One day we feel calm, clear-headed and able to deal with whatever comes our way. The next, the very same situation can leave us feeling anxious, frustrated or stuck.
Our abilities haven’t changed overnight, so why does this phenomenon occur?
I’ve spent some time exploring that question and, along the way, I’ve come to understand resilience very differently to how I once did.
Where does resilience come from and what even is it?
When most of us think about resilience, we think about our ability to cope with life’s challenges, adapt to change and bounce back after difficult experiences. But the more I’ve explored this, the more I’ve come to see resilience as a natural state; a feeling that shapes how we experience life in any given moment.
Resilience is not something we either have or don’t have. It doesn’t need to be created, built or learned. It’s already there. There are simply times when it’s easier to experience than others.
Think about a time when you felt calm and clear-headed. Chances are you also felt more patient, more creative, more resourceful and more able to deal with whatever was in front of you. Now think about a time when your mind was racing with stress or anxiety. Those same qualities can suddenly feel much harder to access.
The way I see it, resilience is our natural capacity to meet life as it unfolds. It’s that feeling of being grounded, clear-headed and calm, able to meet whatever is in front of us without becoming overwhelmed by it. The feeling that you are okay despite your circumstances, not because of them. The good news is that we don’t need to add anything to experience it more often. It’s a subtractive process. As we begin to recognise what is standing in the way of our natural state of wellbeing, qualities like clarity, calm and confidence naturally become easier to access.

What is it that obscures our natural capacity for clarity, calm and resilience?
One of the biggest things I’ve observed is that when we become caught up in our thinking, those thoughts begin to shape our experience of life. If we think sad thoughts we live in a feeling of sadness, and when we think happy thoughts, we experience a feeling of happiness.
Our minds are constantly creating thoughts, making predictions and trying to make sense of the world around us. Most of the time we don’t even notice we’re thinking—we simply experience those thoughts as reality.
When our thinking is clear and balanced, our natural resilience is easy to access. When our minds become caught up in insecure thinking, imagining worst-case scenarios or replaying past events, clarity, calm and confidence can quickly feel out of reach.
Imagine you’re waiting for the results of a medical test. There’s nothing you can do while you wait, yet your mind begins imagining every possible outcome. Your body responds as though those imagined futures are happening now. Your natural sense of calm hasn’t disappeared; it’s become obscured by everything your mind has added to the situation.
Recognising that our experience is always being created through the meaning our mind is making in that moment this doesn’t make life’s challenges disappear, but it can completely change the way we experience them.

This is exactly what we investigate in our workshop, Innate Resilience: Accessing Clarity and Calm. Through practical exercises and guided reflection, we explore ways to navigate life’s inevitable challenges with greater clarity and calm.
