Conscious Communication at Work
Better communication starts with understanding what shapes our conversations
Communication is part of everything we do at work. Every conversation, message, and interaction shapes how we experience our day and how effective we are in our roles.
When communication flows well, we’re more likely to feel understood and valued, connected to others, and able to move things forward with purpose. Work tends to feel more productive, collaborative, and satisfying.
When it doesn’t, the opposite can be true. Things can feel unclear, frustrating, or disconnected, and this can impact not only how we work, but how we feel in ourselves.
So what makes the difference between good and poor communication?
To answer that, it helps to look beneath the surface at what’s really shaping our conversations.
Looking Beneath the Surface
In any conversation, we don’t just communicate through words. There are multiple layers at play. We bring our own expectations, perspectives, values, and emotions into every interaction, often without realising it.
We might have expectations about how something should go.
We see situations through our own perspective, shaped by past experiences and conditioning.
We place importance on different things, based on what we value.
And emotions can arise quickly, often before we’ve had time to think.
The other person is doing exactly the same.

Seeing Communication More Clearly
With a little more awareness, we begin to see that people are not always responding to the same situation we think they are. Their behaviour is shaped by their own patterns, often happening outside of their awareness.
When we see this, communication often feels less personal.
Instead of reacting quickly, there is more space to pause, to understand, and to respond more thoughtfully.
This doesn’t mean we always agree. But it does make it easier to stay connected.
It can also reduce unnecessary stress and help people feel more confident in how they communicate, even in more challenging situations.

A More Conscious Way to Communicate
Conscious communication isn’t about getting it right all the time. It’s about understanding what is influencing communication in the first place.
A little more insight into how we think, feel, and interpret situations can have a meaningful impact, not only on how we communicate with others, but on how we experience those interactions ourselves.
